Eurochile realizará evento abierto de dos días a Pymes de la región de Los Lagos sobre Economía Circular y Destinos Turísticos Inteligentes

The Eurochile Business Foundation was awarded the project “Adaptation to climate change: The circular economy as a strategy to boost the development of smart cities and tourist destinations” through Corfo’s Viraliza Evento Masivo programme. This project will be carried out in the Los Lagos region over a period of 10 months and its main milestone will be the development of a two-day event that will feature expert keynote speeches and panel discussions in the morning and, in the afternoon, thematic working groups to raise entrepreneurial gaps, opportunities and recommendations on the subject.

The main objective of this initiative is to promote the circular economy as a crucial climate change adaptation strategy for smart cities and smart destinations (ITDs). To achieve this, tools will be provided to incentivise the development of circular ventures at the enterprise level. This will be done through the transfer of successful European experiences and strategies, adapted to the local needs and realities of the area.

This project is aimed at 200 MSMEs and entrepreneurs in the tourism sector, as well as those interested in issues related to sustainability, climate change and smart destinations in the Lake District. The objective is to involve those actors who wish to explore and adopt sustainable and circular practices in their tourism operations and services.

Gabriel Pérez, regional director of Corfo Los Lagos said “it is important to participate in this meeting that will bring together a wide range of actors in the tourism sector, including businessmen, entrepreneurs, sustainability experts and local authorities, where they can establish contacts, exchange ideas and explore possible collaborations that boost entrepreneurs not only in their businesses. The updating and learning that takes place in these instances through panel discussions, conferences and practical workshops led by experts in sustainable tourism, climate change and smart destinations allows them to be aware of the latest trends, best practices and innovative tools that can be applied in business”.

He also stressed that the commitment to the sustainable development of the region and to building responsible and environmentally conscious tourism is everyone’s responsibility to create a more prosperous and equitable future for our communities and for future generations.

The massive event, which will take place in May, will be divided into two days and will take place in two provinces of the region. The first will be held in the city of Puerto Varas in the Llanquihue Province, a priority area recognised as an ITD at the national level. On the other hand, the second day will take place in the city of Osorno, in the Province of Osorno. The intention behind this choice is to promote sustainable, smart and circular tourism development in these specific areas.

José Aravena, executive director of the Eurochile Business Foundation, highlights Eurochile’s commitment to the region and the importance of SMEs as the engine of the local economy. “We want to provide them with the necessary tools so that they can integrate into the tourism sector in a sustainable and circular way. Our project provides them with the necessary training to understand these concepts and gives them the tools to implement sustainable practices in their businesses. It is not only about meeting the demands of tourists, but also about contributing to the care of our environment and the development of the community”.

Corfo’s Viraliza Evento Masivo programme is an initiative that seeks to reinforce the environment and/or culture of entrepreneurship and innovation, with the aim of fostering the ecosystem and thus contributing to improving the conditions in which entrepreneurial activity takes place.

Eurochile invites tourism MSMEs in the Coquimbo region to get training in Digitalisation, Digital Marketing and European Networks

The workshop aims to benefit tourism MSMEs, allowing them to learn about the advantages of incorporating digitalisation into their services. In addition, it will address the various tools that digital marketing provides, as well as the identification of opportunities with Europe through Eurochile, in order to facilitate their entry into the international market.

The Eurochile Business Foundation is developing the programme “Reactivation of Regional Tourism with Circular Economy”, an initiative financed by the Regional Government of Coquimbo through the Innovation Fund for Competitiveness (FIC). This programme aims to contribute to the reactivation and recovery of tourism in the region through the generation of new sustainable and circular products, thus promoting the knowledge and practice of circular economy among MSMEs in the area.

In this regard, next Tuesday 16 April 2024 at 9: 30 hours, will be held in online format, the webinar “Digitalization, Digital Marketing and European Networks for Tourism Companies” and will be attended by Alba Viana Lora, with extensive experience in tourist destinations, Spain; Natalia Alvarado Marmuth, in charge of digital marketing in the Agency M + E Communications and Manuela Caruz, head of projects of the Eurochile Business Foundation who will present the various services offered by the European network, Enterprise Europe Network, the largest virtual platform to support SMEs.

Key Energy 2024 Business Mission Exploring Innovation and Trends in the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Sector

Key Energy, internationally recognised as the meeting point for the renewable energy and energy efficiency industry, plays a key role in driving innovation and technology within the sector. It is the leading European event highlighting the acceleration of energy and climate policies, as well as the emerging opportunities available in the international market.

Key Energy’s efficiency lies in its ability to provide companies with direct access to the latest trends, technological advances and best practices in renewable energy and energy efficiency. Through conferences, panel discussions, live demonstrations and product exhibits, participants have the opportunity to learn first-hand about the latest innovations in areas such as Solar, Wind, Hydrogen, Energy Efficiency, Electric Mobility and Sustainable City.

This year, the fair took place from 28 February to 1 March in Rimini, Italy. The Eurochile Business Foundation was present with its Business Mission Key Energy 2024, accompanied by a group of entrepreneurs specialised in renewable energies, who attended and participated in various talks and activities available.

The list of participating companies includes: Circular Construction, Gestrash Simbiosis Colaborativa, Mega Electric, DVP S.A, Energy Asset and Tesla Energy.

With regard to the results obtained after the development of the fair, according to data issued by Key Energy, there was a 41% increase in participation in the 2024 edition compared to 2023, with 60% international attendance. These results consolidate Key Energy as a reference network for the global energy transition community.

In this sense, David Melo, manager of Mega Electric, points out that, “the organisation was very good. This event was an opportunity for us to update ourselves with new technologies and success stories that are being developed in Europe, which serve as a model towards which we want to move and be at the forefront as a company. Furthermore, by participating in the fair we were able to generate networking and produce synergies with international companies, which has been useful to explore the possibility of carrying out joint projects“.

Likewise, Maritza Ojeda, Sustainability Coordinator of DVP S.A., highlights: “The meetings I had were very efficient, because they helped me to contact companies and suppliers, a very efficient experience, especially to thank Eurochile for their efforts and for giving us the opportunity to be part of their Business Mission“.

For companies, participation in Key Energy can translate into a positive impact, providing them with fresh ideas, advanced technological solutions and cutting-edge strategies to improve their competitiveness and sustainability. It helps them to optimise their processes, reduce operating costs, comply with environmental regulations and develop innovative products and services that meet market demands.

Nina Morales, Director of Institutional Affairs and Business Cooperation of the Eurochile Business Foundation, explains the importance of the participation of companies in the Business Missions carried out by Eurochile. “Our business missions are designed to enable SMEs to connect with cutting-edge European companies, allowing them to immerse themselves in the world of new technologies and energy efficiency that are transforming the other side of the continent. We also provide the unique opportunity to learn directly from the industry’s leading innovators, and then apply that knowledge in your own company to help it grow”.

In short, the Eurochile Business Foundation has planned several business missions for 2024, with the purpose of connecting Chilean companies with Europe, a goal aligned with Eurochile’s mission. In addition, these business missions are open to all those companies interested in learning about and adopting new circular practices that are being developed on the other side of the continent.

The Regional Government of Los Lagos and Eurochile join forces to promote sustainability in Osorno with an unprecedented Circular Economy programme

In response to the impact of waste management, Eurochile has implemented this initiative with the support of Gore Los Lagos through the National Regional Development Fund. With a duration of 24 months, the programme will benefit 200 participants, covering a wide range of key actors in the province, recognising them as essential elements in the recycling and waste management chain.

The Regional Governor of Los Lagos, Patricio Vallespin, stresses that “this is a fundamental issue in our field, on technologies in waste management, circular business models, eco-design, which are all issues that SMEs in our region and waste managers should know and participate in the processes involved, therefore, also in this programme what we seek is that this training offer allows installing the circular economy as a requirement, waste management as a requirement for green entrepreneurship that the region must achieve and that is framed in the pact for a sustainable and inclusive region, also the idea is that the knowledge that those who participate in this have allows them to improve their sustainable value offer of their products in such a way as to generate changes in production processes and processing of the materials they use and we also want to deliver some equipment with a focus on improving the pre-treatment capacity required for existing waste to generate waste managers who do their job better”.

“Here we are going to work with grassroots recyclers to see the gaps they have in order to effectively provide a better service that will hopefully allow us to make an integrated use of all waste that could be reused, recycled or redesigned for other processes, so I think the programme is moving forward, for the region because we are preparing for our economy to be effectively circular“, he added.

To achieve these objectives, data collection and updating work has been carried out, in addition to more than 11 workshops for key actors in the province.

Regarding the presentation of new waste management models based on the European experience, these have been developed through workshops and a Spanish consultancy where 2 Implementation Plans for Mixed Waste Management (household and industrial as well as urban and rural) were elaborated in a participatory way. The European experts who have worked in the programme disseminating and transferring knowledge and experiences on Waste Management, Ecodesign and Circular Economy are the Spanish expert Ferran Climent, Co-founder of RedECO, and the French expert Linnet Solway, both recognised for their experience in Circular Economy.

Moreover, the training sessions have been conducted with the main objective of raising awareness and inspiring participants, while providing them with concepts and technical elements to guide them in the development of their own circular initiatives. The topics covered in each session include aspects such as the REP Law, ensuring that circular initiatives are in line with regulatory changes, Industrial Symbiosis and Waste Management. Another highlight is the approach to circular business models and eco-design, as they are methodological tools that guide and empower participants.

The executive director of the Eurochile Business Foundation, José Aravena, mentions that “we are dedicated to organising and executing training sessions on topics of interest to the different beneficiaries in which they can identify how to integrate their knowledge and their different roles and functions in order to contribute not only to their own interests and businesses, but also to contribute to reducing the impact generated by their own waste and its management in the territory where they live and operate. Through the programme they have been acquiring knowledge necessary for their projects and initiatives, they have learned to identify what they want to develop and with whom, for which the programme has given them the opportunity to connect with other people in their area and establish links with local projects“.

The first component of our programme focuses on strengthening technical capacities for the proper use of household waste, and in some cases small-scale industrial waste from SMEs. In the second stage, we focus on training sessions on circular economy to promote the sustainable management of organic and inorganic waste, which we have carried out in various municipalities in the province, such as Puyehue, Osorno, Puerto Octay, Río Negro, Purranque and Entre Lagos“, he concluded.

The support of the National Regional Development Fund, through the Regional Government and the Regional Council, has been fundamental to the success of this programme, which not only drives innovation in Osorno, but also contributes to the economic and social development of the region, promoting decentralisation and citizen participation throughout Chile.

Eurochile Foundation executes Ecodesign project to strengthen SMEs in the region of Los Lagos

The Eurochile Business Foundation will carry out the project “Ecodesign and Circular Economy for SMEs in the Los Lagos Region”, which aims to contribute to sustainability and reduce environmental impact through the implementation of the Circular Economy. This project, co-financed by the Regional Productive Development Committee of Los Lagos through the Corfo funding line Viraliza Training for entrepreneurship and innovation, will last 10 months and will be developed specifically in the region mentioned.

The main objective of this initiative is to promote the culture of sustainable innovation in the entrepreneurial ecosystem of the tenth region. This will be achieved through the implementation of a training programme in eco-design with a focus on circular economy that includes 10 modules in face-to-face format, with the participation of a national expert and two European experts remotely. SMEs in the region will be identified and prioritised with the aim of adopting specific strategies to improve production processes and the design of products, services or processes of their companies, in order to obtain better value offers and reduce environmental impact.

Gabriel Pérez, regional director of Corfo Los Lagos explained that “in the region we have a flagship project on the Circular Economy, seeking to be by 2025 the pioneering region in the prevention and management of non-hazardous solid waste in the main productive sectors, through this type of meeting we want to raise awareness in companies about the importance of solid industrial waste management and the relevance of moving from the current linear economy model to a circular model, as an opportunity to give new life or optimise the use or disposal of waste within the framework of the 9Rs of this circular model (reject-reuse-repair-repurpose-recycle-recycle-reuse-repair-recondition-remanufacture-reconvert-recycle-recycle-recycle-recover). This is in line with the regional governor’s announcement regarding the establishment of the first circular economy technology centre in the Los Lagos region, we seek to reduce waste and pollution, maintain products and materials in use and the regeneration of natural systems, for this, reflecting on how we contribute, we contribute to the regeneration of ecosystems that are already tremendously degraded is a key opportunity for us“, he said.

The training programme will be carried out in person in the municipalities of Puerto Varas and Osorno, with the aim of ensuring the participation of beneficiaries from at least two provinces of the region. The participants of the programme will be companies and/or enterprises, with a special focus on those that have some link with business associations and that operate in sectors of regional interest, such as Aquaculture, Forestry, Construction, Maritime and Shipping Industry and Tourism. The goal is to bring together at least 30 companies and/or enterprises in the area.

In this regard, José Aravena, executive director of the Eurochile Business Foundation, highlights that, “At Eurochile we focus on driving innovation and sustainable development in SMEs. In collaboration with the programmes offered by Corfo, this joint initiative will help a number of companies to change their current approach and take their business to the next level, thus promoting more sustainable economic growth. We know that by integrating circular economy principles into your production processes, you will not only be contributing to the care of the environment, but you will also improve the efficiency of your operations, reduce costs and increase your company’s competitiveness in today’s market“.

The Training Programme to be implemented by Eurochile is an initiative that seeks to strengthen the environment and/or culture of entrepreneurship and innovation, with the aim of fostering the ecosystem, and thus contribute to improving the conditions in which entrepreneurial activity takes place.

Successful participation of companies in the Ecomondo Business Mission 2023

Every year, the international trade fair Ecomondo, one of Europe’s leading events in the field of green economy and sustainability, is held in Rimini, Italy. This event serves as a space for meeting and dialogue between various industries, relevant actors, opinion leaders and local authorities.

For the 2023 edition, the Eurochile Business Foundation was present with its Ecomondo 2023 Business Mission. The mission was led by the Business Cooperation team and consisted of attending, together with a group of entrepreneurs specialised in sustainability and circular economy, the various activities, expert presentations, workshops, conferences, seminars and field trips that took place from 7 to 10 November.

The list of participating companies includes Volta SpA, Asipla, the Systems Biotechnology Centre of the Andrés Bello University (UNAB), the National Association of the Recycling Industry (ANIR), Resiter, Remap SpA, Kalewün, Hidronor Chile S. A., Red Pyme Mujer, Nido Biotech, Ecología en Tu Barrio, Bellbast Chile, Comberplast, Ecobio and Inmobiliaria Vega Monumental S. A. In addition, the Mayor of the Municipality of Quemchi, Luis Macías and representatives of the Regional Government of Los Lagos will participate.

According to the results delivered by the Ecomondo trade fair, the latest edition of Ecomondo saw a significant increase compared to the 2022 data. In particular, there was a +15% increase in attendance compared to the previous year, a remarkable figure considering that 2022 was held simultaneously with the KEY Energy fair.

In terms of the knowledge acquired by the entrepreneurs, the innovation and new trends that are taking place in Europe in terms of sustainability and circular economy in the various sectors present at the fair stand out. Bárbara Baxa, executive director of Red Pyme Mujer, shares her experience: “I was able to learn about the most outstanding business models that develop productive activities related to recycling and waste treatment. In addition, I had the opportunity to familiarise myself with new technologies for reuse and recycling, and the most interesting thing was to discover the collaborative models in the recovery of some waste, such as textile waste”.

On the other hand, Alejandro Valencia, general manager of Resiter, shares that one of the main motivations for joining this Business Mission was to learn about European initiatives on sustainability and circular economy, recognising the importance of keeping up to date in order to stand out from the competition. “It is essential for companies that are part of the Circular Economy ecosystem to be able to observe European practices in different fields and industries. Talking to technology providers is very helpful to understand where different industries are heading and what are the most relevant technologies and treatments. We can also identify more specialised technologies that might be interesting for specific cases.

Carolina Peña, business development leader at the Centre for Systems Biotechnology at the Universidad Andrés Bello, also points out that the fair has been a pleasant surprise. In her opinion, there are many interesting aspects related to the university’s interests, especially in the field of biotechnology. This provides opportunities to establish international contacts and develop projects that can bring innovation to Chile.

In this sense, Nina Morales, Director of Institutional Affairs and Business Cooperation, highlights that: “it was a unique opportunity for companies to connect with leaders and experts in environmental sustainability, technology and business development. These missions are part of Eurochile’s vision to foster sustainable growth and international collaboration. In addition, we invite all companies to join the next edition of Ecomondo, which is a unique opportunity to explore new trends, establish key contacts and lead companies towards a more sustainable future”.

For this reason, the Business Missions organised by Eurochile play a key role in providing companies with the opportunity to learn about the latest trends in various fields, especially those related to the circular economy and sustainability. This is in line with the foundation’s mission to facilitate the connection between Chilean SMEs and the European market.

Again in 2024, Eurochile will organise a business mission to Ecomondo. Preparations are underway and dissemination will start shortly.

The environmental responsibility of Greenwashing and Green Marketing

In recent years, consumers have been exposed to numerous advertising campaigns promoting products and services based on environmental protection, with the aim of influencing and generating empathy among consumers.

However, the reality of the message discrepancies in terms of compliance with environmental standards presented by each company borders on misleading advertising. This practice is known as “greenwashing”, a communications strategy in which a company or organisation attempts to present a falsely positive image of its environmental practices. Its roots go back to 1986, when environmental activist Jay Westerveld pointed out the inconsistency between the towel recycling practices of a hotel that was, at the same time, expanding and destroying an ecosystem on the island of Fiji.

In essence, greenwashing involves exaggerating or distorting the environmentally friendly aspects of a product, service, company or practice in order to mislead consumers and enhance their perception of the brand without any real backing in sustainable actions or policies.

In this sense, Nancy E. Furlow, an academic at Marymount University in the United States, defines the concept as: “the provision of false or insufficient information by an organisation to present its public image as environmentally responsible”.

In response to this situation, a bill is currently being drafted in Chile with the aim of sanctioning these practices, defining concepts, establishing sanctions and regulating a commercial activity that is currently only supervised through general regulations, such as the Consumer Law No. 19.496.

On the other hand, there is green marketing, also known as eco-marketing. This is a marketing strategy focused on promoting products and services that are considered environmentally responsible. The main objective of green marketing is to satisfy consumer needs while minimising negative environmental impact.

In addition, it is a key tool that aims to redesign product, price, distribution and promotion based on ecological objectives, linked to environmental responsibility and collaboration with the environment. These objectives are backed up with empirically substantiated messages through environmental certifications, workshops and courses. This includes the promotion of sustainable business practices, consumer education on the importance of choosing environmentally friendly products.

Green marketing can provide a number of benefits for companies, such as improved corporate reputation, increased customer loyalty, access to new market segments, compliance with environmental regulations and long-term cost reduction through more efficient and sustainable practices.

For this reason, a company committed to green marketing must make decisions about its products that are aimed at reducing the consumption of resources and minimising the amount of waste generated throughout the product’s life cycle, while still meeting consumer needs. The eco-efficiency of a product is based on its raw materials, the type of production process, its use, its environmental performance throughout its life cycle and its potential for reuse. Although green products contribute to reducing negative externalities on the environment, they cannot eliminate their impact.

In short, green marketing reflects a real commitment to sustainability, promoting environmentally friendly products and business practices. In contrast, greenwashing, while appearing as an environmental commitment, lacks authenticity and credibility. In that sense, it is essential that consumers are aware and critical of these misleading practices, choosing to support authentic initiatives that not only promote a more responsible marketplace, but also contribute to a sustainable future for our planet.

Hazelnut producers took part in Eurochile’s Fieragricola 2024 Business Mission

Fieragricola is an international trade fair held in Verona, Italy. It is renowned for its specialisation in agriculture and agri-food, covering a wide range of topics including agricultural machinery, innovative technologies, products and services for agriculture, among others. This fair is a valuable platform for industry professionals to exchange knowledge, discover the latest trends and establish strategic business contacts.

In addition to the exhibition of agricultural products and services, Fieragricola incorporates conferences, seminars and specialised events that explore the challenges and current approaches in agriculture. In response to the growing importance of innovation and sustainability, this year’s edition focused on the presentation of products and technologies related to sustainable and efficient agricultural practices.

For its 116th version, which took place from 31 January to 03 February, the Eurochile Business Foundation was present with its Fieragricola 2024 Business Mission, led by Rodrigo Silva, head of projects in the area of Sustainability and Circular Economy. This mission was made up of producers from “Avellanos Patagonia A.G.” (AVEPA), a group of hazelnut producers from the south of Chile who are making a foray into European hazelnut cultivation. During their participation, they had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the latest European trends and technologies used in the agricultural sector.

Participating companies include Agrícola Exportadora e Importadora la Poza, Inversiones agrícolas Jeleila, Osvaldo Rodolfo Mohr Amithauer, Maritza Flor Verdugo Riquelme, Agrícola Línea Real, Agrícola y Ganadera OM, Cristian Alonso Valdivieso Sotomayor and Claudia Francisca Valdivieso Montesino.

It was a unique opportunity for national producers to learn about international trends in the agricultural sector. It was also an excellent opportunity to establish contacts with European companies and explore the new technologies and digitalisation that are being implemented in the sector, with the intention of replicating them in Chile,” says Rodrigo Silva.

With regard to the figures obtained from Fieragricola 2024, the event was attended by 730 exhibitors and 120 conferences and specialised events were held. In addition, the fair attracted a significant attendance of 69,000 trade professionals, who actively participated in talks, workshops and seminars held during the event.

Cristian Parra, president of AVEPA, highlights the efforts made by Eurochile to make their participation in the fair possible and the importance of having become familiar with the trends and technologies that are being used in the agricultural sector. “We have learned new techniques used in modern agriculture, especially in products that promote a more environmentally friendly agriculture in a sustainable way“.

On the other hand, producer Maritza Verdugo shares: “I found it an extraordinary fair, with a large number of stands and companies. I have gained considerable knowledge, especially in relation to the theme of environmental care, which has been present with biodegradable and sustainable products in agriculture, which is always interesting. I would like to thank Eurochile for giving me the opportunity to experience so much at this fair”.

In conclusion, the participation of entrepreneurs in the Business Missions organised by the Eurochile Business Foundation not only represents a unique opportunity to establish connections with European companies, but also to be aware of the latest trends and business practices on the other side of the continent. This experience not only enriches business knowledge, but also fosters international collaboration and the exchange of innovative ideas.

The Roadmap for the Sustainable Transformation of Tourism Businesses

In order to address the effects of climate change affecting tourism destinations, the Sustainability Roadmap has been developed by the UN Global Compact Spain, through its Tourism Working Group.

This initiative sets out 10 universal and priority principles aimed at advancing business sustainability in the tourism sector, each supported by proposed actions, good practices and timelines. It also highlights the integration of digital transformation as a cross-cutting approach in all areas.

Environmental proposals include the reduction of carbon emissions by 2030, support for a just transition that addresses the social impacts of climate change, a commitment to 100% renewable energy by 2050, the progressive reduction of waste generated, collaboration to achieve a positive water impact, as well as the promotion of biofuels and electric vehicles.

In the social and labour sphere, it seeks to guarantee equal representation, participation and leadership at all levels of management, as well as to ensure that 100% of workers receive a living wage, among other measures.

Fulfilling the axes of this Roadmap will be crucial for the future of the tourism industry, one of the most vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. Therefore, the effectiveness of the measures implemented will be fundamental to advance in the transition process.

Tourism businesses will be challenged not only to calculate and offset their carbon footprint, but also to reduce it through sustainability-based actions. These actions include the use of renewable and clean energy, the implementation of innovation and technology to generate more efficient processes, and the establishment of science-based targets to achieve climate neutrality. In addition, decarbonisation is promoted at all levels of the value chain.

The Roadmap is presented as a theoretical framework to guide industry actors in contributing to corporate sustainability in a real and effective way.
