Chilean construction companies move towards circular economy: Eurochile and Eurecat contribute to the sector’s transformation

In a global context where sustainability and the fight against climate change are priorities, the circular economy has become a key approach to transform industrial sectors, especially the construction sector. Therefore, the Technology Centre of Catalonia, Eurecat and the Eurochile Business Foundation are developing the project “Articulation and development of sustainable business models led by MSMEs, offering sustainable products and services in the Chilean construction sector in its transition to the circular economy”.

This project is part of the AL-INVEST Verde programme, a European Union initiative that aims to promote economic, social and environmental integration between Europe and Latin America. This is achieved through the promotion of projects that favour sustainable business development. The programme focuses on strengthening the capacities of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to adopt sustainable practices and green technologies. With a duration of 30 months, the programme aims to benefit more than 300 MSMEs that supply products and services related to the construction sector.

One of the key tools of the project is the self-diagnosis that allows companies to assess their level of circularity. This assessment is based on four main dimensions: design and planning, value chain processes, value use and recovery, and organisational culture. Depending on the level achieved, MSMEs receive specific recommendations to improve their sustainability performance.

Within the framework of the project under development, the agenda is divided into six sections, in which various topics have been discussed in depth, such as: Circular Economy Models and their applicability; Roadmap references; the Law 20. 920 ‘Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)’; Circularity Strategies in the construction sector; axes of the Action Plan applied to Principals, Designers, Architects and Engineers; European Mentoring, which attendees can access through the Enterprise Europe Network; and finally, the types of Environmental Certifications and Indicators related to the project.

The project focuses on 8 links: Client, Design, Manufacturing, Logistics, Construction, Operations, Demolition and Recycling. Its objective is to strengthen and improve the linkage of MSMEs and their business organisations, so that they have or aspire to have a supply of sustainable products, promoting, training and implementing sustainable practices and circular economy, inspired by successful experiences in Europe.

This project has achieved important advances, such as the delivery of the “Guidelines for environmental and circularity certifications and indicators”, as well as the successful completion of 5 workshops addressed to 5 groups of beneficiaries. These groups were divided as follows:

  1. Group of principals, design and engineering in the Metropolitan Region.
  2. Group of manufacturers and suppliers of goods and services in the Metropolitan Region.
  3. Group of principals, design and engineering in the Los Lagos Region.
  4. Manufacturing group and suppliers of goods and services in the Lake District.
  5. Other value chain actors, specifically the target groups (design and manufacturing) in the Metropolitan Region.

Currently, according to the project’s action plan, visits to the beneficiary companies are being carried out, as well as the scheduling of two seminars: one in the Metropolitan Region and the other in the Los Lagos Region.

In short, Eurochile and Eurecat highlight the importance of training companies in circular and sustainable business models. To this end, in addition to the workshops and seminars, mentoring will be carried out with European companies through the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN), a support network for MSMEs in Europe whose mission is to boost their competitiveness through internationalisation and technology transfer. It should be noted that Eurochile is the only node of the EEN network in Chile and a pioneer in Latin America.

We appreciate the interest of the attendees and we hope to continue developing events of this magnitude“.

Valentina Ulloa from the recycling area of Bioprocess Chile, a member company of the Business Circle, commented: “At Eurochile we have managed to establish several alliances and reach niches we were unaware of, which has allowed us to open doors both locally and internationally. We want to highlight this excellent instance, as well as the support and interest provided by the Business Circle to its members“.

The Eurochile Business Circle has established itself as a platform that provides participating companies with a range of valuable activities. During his intervention, he highlighted: “Today I see a great variety of stands and I love that entrepreneurs can have a space where they can generate networks and contacts to share experiences. I have had the opportunity to participate in Eurochile initiatives, where I was able to travel and learn about experiences in other parts of the world, particularly in Europe“.

This event was consolidated as a key instance to empower SMEs in the national ecosystem, providing them with tools and knowledge through the talks and panels held. It also allowed participants to share experiences, generate alliances, establish contacts and connect with the European market. The event reaffirms the role of the Eurochile Business Circle as a platform that gives visibility to Chilean companies, with the aim of enhancing their development.

Manuela Caruz: “The mentoring activity is a great opportunity for tourism SMEs and MSMEs in the Coquimbo Region”

Since the 1990s, the Eurochile Business Foundation has played a strategic role in linking national SMEs and MSMEs with the Old Continent. With decades of experience and consolidated links with Europe, it has made available a great opportunity for tourism companies in the Coquimbo Region.

This is a mentoring activity with European counterparts whose main objective will be to open new markets and make tourism products and services of SMEs and tourism MSMEs in the Coquimbo Region visible in the European market, within the framework of the project “Reactivation of Regional Tourism with Circular Economy”, financed by the Innovation Fund for Competitiveness (FIC) of the Regional Government of Coquimbo.

In this regard, we spoke with Manuela Caruz, Director of International Networks of the Eurochile Business Foundation, who tells us about the world of opportunities that are opening up for companies in the Coquimbo Region and the quotas that are still available to access the important benefits of the programme.

He explains that the mentoring activity with European counterparts will allow companies in the Coquimbo Region to access new knowledge, trends and experiences free of charge. In addition, they will be able to join digital platforms to promote their products and services to new markets, in an increasingly globalised world driven by the use of new technologies.

Manuela Caruz highlights that the activity aimed at 200 SMEs and tourism MSMEs in the Coquimbo Region will allow entrepreneurs to connect through the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN), to more than 60 countries around the world and more than 4,000 experts belonging to 600 organisations, all recognised for their excellence in business support. “A unique opportunity for growth and new business development”, he highlights.

Importantly, the EEN is the world’s largest network supporting small and medium-sized enterprises with international ambitions, providing the tools needed to innovate and grow on an international scale.

  • What is the role that the Eurochile Business Foundation plays with tourism MSMEs and SMEs in our country?

The Eurochile Business Foundation has a very important role in the development and strengthening of MSMEs and tourism SMEs in our country and it is mainly based on the relationship we have with Europe through the various activities we carry out. This relationship with institutions of the most different indoles in Europe through the various networks with which we work allows us to be in direct contact and link with counterparts to learn first-hand about experiences, knowledge transfer and the latest trends in the European market.

  • How does Eurochile’s link with European networks materialise?

Eurochile’s link with European networks is materialised through direct links with counterparts who can provide information, trends, knowledge and technology from Europe. To this end, various activities are carried out, such as virtual and face-to-face business rounds that are held in Europe and Chile, where MSMEs in the Chilean tourism sector can join. Also, mentorings are developed where European companies can support Chilean MSMEs in the different stages.

In addition, some of the services provided by the network are incorporated into the different projects developed by the Foundation, one of which is the “FIC Reactivation of Regional Tourism with Circular Economy” programme, which we are implementing in the Coquimbo region. In which the mentoring activity is included free of charge for the beneficiary companies of the project and will allow them to contact European companies and institutions for the exchange of experiences.

  • How many tourism SMEs and MSMEs have benefited from the support of the Eurochile Business Foundation?

In the project that we are implementing in the Coquimbo Region, we have a total of 200 beneficiary companies. It should be noted that the participation form for this activity is available for those who still want to join.

  • What are the direct and indirect benefits for tourism SMEs and MSMEs of access to European platforms?

Direct access to reliable European contacts, as they are made through the Enterprise Europe Network, which is a European network endorsed by the European Commission.

In addition, as the work is done through nodes, there are no language barriers, since the contact is made through Eurochile.

  • What does the Mentoring Plan promoted by the Eurochile Business Foundation consist of and what are the benefits of this programme?

The “Mentoring” Plan promoted by the Eurochile Business Foundation with European counterparts allows the transfer of knowledge, experiences and the generation of alliances for business or projects from European to Chilean companies. Mentoring generates instances between Chilean companies or organisations and European counterparts for the transfer of knowledge. It works with partners of the EEN network for bilateral matching, according to the profiles of Chilean companies, a mentoring plan is developed to define the search for supply and / or demand with their peers in Europe. The profiles are distributed among the partners of the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) to make a bilateral match and organise meetings with counterparts in Europe.

All these activities are carried out thanks to the fact that Eurochile is part, since 2008, of the EEN network, the largest support network for SMEs with international projection, which combines international business experience and local knowledge that helps to bring innovations to new markets.

Eurochile also has experience in carrying out dissemination and transfer activities through training and consultancy (business models, innovation management, associativity, value addition, marketing, exports, technology transfer and know-how), implementation and management of projects that seek to improve the competitiveness and productivity of SMEs through the strengthening of associativity, public-private dialogue, good environmental practices, digitisation and gender equality.

After the activity, a satisfaction survey will be carried out with the companies in order to obtain information to support them in different areas of action.

Training sessions focusing on digitisation and circular practices will be held in the Los Lagos region as part of the programme implemented by Eurochile and promoted by the Regional Government

The Eurochile Business Foundation, in the framework of the programme “Strengthening Recycling and Circular Economy in the Province of Osorno”, supported by the Gore Los Lagos through the National Regional Development Fund (FNDR), will hold a series of workshops for grassroots collectors and the recycling community.

The main objective of this programme is to strengthen and improve the associated processes to reduce the negative environmental impact caused by the inadequate management of waste, both organic and inorganic, generated in domestic and industrial activities in the Province.

To this end, a series of 5 workshops called “Sustainable Business Workshops” will be held from 18 June to 4 July, where participants will be able to learn about digital literacy, the Canvas business model, project management tools and recognise the different circular practices that can be carried out with regard to recycling and waste management.

Tourism in the Coquimbo Region with signs of economic recovery

A positive balance was recorded during summer in the Coquimbo Region, according to figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INE) and the National Tourism Service (Sernatur).

According to the Monthly Survey of Tourist Accommodation prepared by the National Statistics Institute, during the month of February 2024, a total of 202,439 overnight stays (corresponding to the total number of nights that passengers stay in the establishment) were recorded in the Coquimbo Region, increasing by 13.1% compared to the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, the room occupancy rate was 55.6%, an increase of 0.78%.

The study indicated that in the same period a total of 85,003 tourists arrived at different tourist accommodation establishments in the Coquimbo Region, representing a growth of 16.5% in the last 12 months.

Meanwhile, the National Tourism Service highlighted the Coquimbo Region, in its report on “Occupancy in Tourist Accommodation 2024”, as one of the main tourist destinations in the country, thanks to its natural conditions and hotel infrastructure. The study refers favourably to the consolidated tourist destinations of Valle del Elqui and the locality of Punta de Choros, in the commune of La Higuera, qualifying them as highly attractive.

The positive figures provided by these public bodies are in line with the trend in January 2024, reported by the national director of Sernatur, Angélica Funes, who said that a total of 800,000 visitors arrived in the IV Region, mainly concentrated in La Serena and Coquimbo, during the first 15 days of the year 2024. Add to that the arrival of the trans-Andean people through the Agua Negra border crossing that links Chile with Argentina, entering the country almost 100 thousand Argentinians coming mainly from the provinces of San Juan and Mendoza, whose main destination were the resorts of the Coquimbo Region during the first fortnight of January 2024.

The Eurochile Business Circle holds a webinar focused on the promotion and internationalisation of SMEs

On Wednesday 8 May, the Business Circle of the Eurochile Business Foundation held the webinar “Internationalisation, Promotion and Export of SMEs”, given by Andrea Batazzi, representative of Multirep Services and Ecomondo in Latin America.

During the activity, the members of the Business Circle had the opportunity to learn about Batazzi’s experience in the Italian and European market. They also discussed the importance of exporting and its characteristics, so that companies can take into account the conditions and requirements when exporting their products to Europe.

SMEs looking to expand into international markets must pay special attention to the requirements and regulations of the European market. Compliance with these regulations is essential to be able to enter and succeed in Europe. Each country within the European Union has its own specific legislation, which can further complicate the process. However, having the support of organisations such as the Eurochile Business Foundation can be crucial, as it not only has the necessary experience to guide Chilean companies in the process of adapting to European regulations, but also has a wide network of contacts that facilitates the creation of connections between both markets,” says Batazzi.

He also presented the connections available in the European market with respect to the interests of the members of the Business Circle, as well as the importance of differentiating the terms internationalisation and export. He also highlighted the numerous synergies that can be generated with European counterparts and stressed the importance of building value and trust with Italian entrepreneurs, who deeply value relationships when generating business.

In short, the new platform created by Eurochile is presented as a strategic and useful tool to connect and strengthen the participating companies. It also opens up new opportunities for growth and development for companies seeking to expand their horizons in the European market. With this platform, the Eurochile Business Foundation reaffirms its commitment to strengthen business links and foster a dynamic and cooperative business environment.
